A “silicon shield suitcase” has been going viral online, featuring a circuit board pattern and stamped with the letters TSMC. The silver 20-inch suitcase that went up for preorder late last year was exclusively for TSMC employees. They’ve gradually been shipped out, and now many recipients are reselling them. They should cost less than NT$10,000, but at least one has posted for the outrageous price of NT$500,000 on the resale market.

This 20-inch suitcase made especially for TSMC employees appears to roll around nicely. Most are selling online for anywhere from NT$3,000 to NT$10,000, which seems reasonable. But wait. This person is selling it for the absurd price of NT$499,999.

Voice of Ms. Hsieh
Luggage buyer
I figured it was probably a gimmick. When I looked into it, I found that this brand of 20-inch suitcase sells for around NT$5,000 or NT$6,000. From the circuit board pattern, it’s obvious it’s made of polycarbonate, but it looks like metal and has a nice texture.

Ms. Hsieh spent NT$4,200 to buy this specialty suitcase. TSMC employees had to apply to get the giveaways, which feature a circuit board design and the name TSMC on the side.

Voice of Ms. Chen (voice altered)
Luggage seller
I have a lot since I have relatives who work at TSMC.

Tang Yuan-chun
Marketing expert
If you set a high price, especially an extremely high price, it’ll show up higher in the search. A lot are gimmicks to catch people’s attention, whether the price is extremely high or extremely low. But I want to remind people that especially for these preorder or in-stock limited-edition products, if they’ve been around for a while, many are counterfeit.

Marketing experts warn that you can only find out the real price for these items when you click into the posting. For something like this suitcase, buying it is a sign of faith in Taiwan’s “silicon shield.”But whenever you’re spending a large amount of money at once, you should be careful to avoid falling prey to a scam.
